ART + SCIENCE

Interconnecting the world in which we live

A collaboration that enables science to inspire art and art to inspire science, and that ultimately benefits students, researchers, creators and community members curious about the interconnected world in which we live.

The Art + Science Incubator is a platform that initiates collaborative, cross-disciplinary project research in and development of innovative artistic and scientific assembly and exhibition in concert with robust Bellevue University student engagement, transcollegial collaboration, public outreach, and cultural partnership.

ART + SCIENCE INCUBATOR HISTORY

In July of 2021, Professor David Joel Thomas (Assistant Professor and Program Director of Creative Arts) and Dr. John Kyndt (Professor of Microbiology, Nutrition, and Sustainability and Program Director of Sustainability Management) entered into dialogue with notable artists, Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero, founders of the Chicago-based art collaborative, Luftwerk (www.luftwerk.net) with the aim of exploring a collaborative Art and Science partnership centered on Dr. Kyndt’s adaptive algae research. Over the course of the academic year, the conversation grew to include other faculty and administration of the Bellevue University community and members of the wider Omaha creative community, including executives at KANEKO and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. Inspired by a talk delivered by Luftwerk, Professor Thomas, and Dr. Kyndt, Professor and Program Director of Master’s of Industrial and Organization Psychology, JoDee Goracke entered into the cross-disciplinary conversation as a principle contributor to the Art + Science Incubator. With Professor Goracke’s involvement, the Art + Science Incubator widened its brief to include the Social Sciences and Human-Centered Design. We aim for this triangulated, holistic approach – Art, Science, and Human-Centered Design – to bring energy and excitement, creativity and commitment to the educational, cultural, and business community of Bellevue/Omaha.
